The Political Diversity of the World Transhumanist Association (“But I’m sure the CybDemites will be curious about the results of the political self-identity question. Very little change since the December 2003, although there was an uptick in left-wing identities.”)

Cyborg Democracie

Cyborg Democracie “Cyborg democracy is a nexus for techno-progressives, or as we say “for democratic transhumanists, nanosocialists, revolutionary singularitarians, non-anthropocentric personhood theorists, radical futurists, leftist extropians, bioutopians and biopunks, socialist-feminist cyborgs, transgenders, body modifiers, basic income advocates, world federalists, agents of the Culture and the Cassini Division, Viridians and technoGaians – transmitting a sexy, high-tech vision of a radically democratic future.”) (Die Seite bietet ein riesiges Angebot an transhumanistisch orientierten Texten zum Themenspektrum Politik. Auf der Seite findet sich auch eine sehr hilfreiche Übersicht: Overview of Transhumanist and Bioconservative Politics.)

The Consensus

The Consensus (“The closest concise description is something like “Libertarian Green technophile global nationalist” with elements from the traditional Left and Right and an underpinning of Transhumanist philosophy. It is this latter aspect which provides an overarching vision of what the future should be – a vision that is lacking in current politics.”) Transhumanistisch orientierte Klein-Partei aus England.

The Presidents Council of Bioethics

Posted in Critics, Ethics, Transhumanism at 3:37 pm by rheil

Robert A. Freitas Jr.: What Price Freedom? [KurzweilAI.net] (“Is a tyrannized humanity worth preserving, even at the expense of its freedom, in order to maintain the very existence of the human species, recognizing that global tyranny is a logical end-state of the unchecked spread of nanotechnology-enabled dictatorships that are capable of employing perfect mind control?”)

Michael Buerger: From The Enlightenment to N-Lightenment [KurzweilAI.net] (“The criminal potentials inherent in molecular manufacturing include powerful new illegal drugs, mass murder via compromised assembly codes, and a “killer virus” crossing out of cyberspace into the physical realm. A criminal-justice futurist examines the possibilities.”)

Tom Craver: Safer Molecular Manufacturing through Nanoblocks [KurzweilAI.net] (“Lego-style “nanoblocks” could prevent a molecular-assembly fabber from building an atom-precise nanofactory or devices that could help in any attempt to “bootstrap” production of an atom-precise nanofactory, reducing the risk of proliferation of atom-precise MM to “rogue nations” or terrorists.”)

Steve Burgess: The (Needed) New Economics of Abundance [KurzweilAI.net] (“Molecular manufacturing coupled with AI could bring about a “personal manufacturing” revolution and a new era of abundance. But abundance could be highly disruptive, so we need to design a new economics of abundance so society is prepared for it.”)

Brian Wang: Considering Military and Ethical Implications of Nanofactory Level Nanotechnology [KurzweilAI.net] (“Nanofactory-level nanotechnology could make current weapons systems obsolete and make genocide and super-oppression easier. So the economic bounty from nanotechnology should be used to reduce motivations for conflict. For example, if nanotechnology makes a nation’s economy grow at 24% per year, in three years, that nation will have twice as much stuff; they would have less incentive to attack an equal-size opponent and try to take their stuff.”)

Robert Freitas: Robots in the bloodstream: the promise of nanomedicine [KurzweilAI.net] (“In just a few decades physicians could be sending tiny machines into our bodies to diagnose and cure disease. These nanodevices will be able to repair tissues, clean blood vessels and airways, transform our physiological capabilities, and even potentially counteract the aging process.”)

Nanotechnology Information

Nanotechnology Information (“Advanced nanotechnology may build machines that are thousands of times more powerful—and hundreds of times cheaper—than today’s devices. The humanitarian potential is enormous; so is the potential for misuse. The vision of CRN is a world in which molecular manufacturing is widely used for productive and beneficial purposes, and where malicious uses are limited by effective administration of the technology. CRN acts to raise awareness of the issues. We believe that even a technology as powerful as molecular manufacturing can be used wisely and well—but that without adequate information, unwise use will be far too common. The mission of CRN is to raise awareness of the issues presented by nanotechnology: the benefits and dangers, and the possibilities for responsible use.”)

Foresight Nanotech Institute (“Advancing Beneficial Nanotechnology. Foresight is the leading think tank and public interest institute on nanotechnology. Founded in 1986, Foresight was the first organization to educate society about the benefits and risks of nanotechnology. At that time, nanotechnology was a little-known concept. Today, with the basic framework of public understanding in place, we are refocusing our efforts on guiding nanotechnology research, public policy and education to address the critical challenges facing humanity. Foresight’s new mission is to ensure the beneficial implementation of nanotechnology.”)

Nanodot: Nanotechnology News and Discussion of Emerging Technologies (“Nanodot is a community web site; members who find something worth sharing on the web submit the URL and a brief story about what’s there… then the Nanodot team spiffs it up in fancy HTML and publishes it to the site. Members can then post comments on it, and post responses to other members’ comments (and each of those comments can include links to other resources on the web). The newest stories show up at the top of the Nanodot home page; the older ones eventually migrate off the home page but are still available to view.”)

US National Science and Technology Council, Committee on Technology, Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology: ”Nanostructure Science and Technology, A Worldwide Study”. [September 1999]. (“Nanostructure science and technology is a broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development activity that has been growing explosively worldwide in the past few years. It has the potential for revolutionizing the ways in which materials and products are created and the range and nature of functionalities that can be accessed. It is already having a significant commercial impact, which will assuredly increase in the future. A worldwide study of research and development status and trends in nanoparticles, nanostructured materials, and nanodevices (or more concisely, nanostructure science and technology) was carried out during the period 1996-98 by an eight-person panel under the auspices of the World Technology (WTEC) Division of Loyola College.”)
